How to prepare FAST Food!
We ALL love to eat, right? Who doesn’t? A huge juicy burger and fries with a thick chocolate shake sounds so amazing after a long week at the office. A Krispy Kreme doughnut fresh off the press with your extra Mocha latte yaya with extra whip…hey…you deserve it! Don’t get me wrong…my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
The only problem is that the majority of Americans today unfortunately eat more fast food than they cook at home. According to a new global survey on obesity on NBC News.com Americans have the #1 obesity rate in the WORLD. It says that “Nearly three quarter of American men, and nearly 60 percent of American women are either overweight or obese in the U.S.” Sadly, 30 percent of children and teens are obese or overweight in our country today.
I totally agree, as a single, working mom, it is difficult to have dinner prepared and on the table in a timely manner…especially after a long day at the office. Toting kids to and from practices, and everything else that comes my way, it is so tempting and convenient to want to stop off most nights and grab fast food or takeout.
In a recent poll, most Americans say they eat out 3-4 times a week for dinner. In addition, the QUALITY of food you are consuming (lord knows what is in that burger) may not be all that it is cracked up to be…and the salad the restaurants deem “healthy,” usually aren’t with all the extra toppings and gooey dressings. On top of it all, it gets expensive to feed a family while going out. We all want our food NOW and FAST…it is available…and its not from the drive thru.
Fast Food Tips that I use to prepare healthy, delicious meals for me and my kids during the work week, minimizing trips to the drive thru:
- Plan a “Menu”….. If you are like me, you are always thinking about the next meal. I can stick to my budget and manage my time better when I know what I will prepare for. If you are bored with the same ole-same ole dinners (spaghetti, tacos, and burgers)…don’t be afraid to go online and get ideas on easy meals…everything is online nowadays…especially recipes. A few of my favorites are www.foodnetwork.com, www.allrecipes.com.
- Planning a “Menu” part 2 …. ask your kids what they may want to see on the menu (within reason, of course). I try to include my kids on the prep so no one has complaints…after all, just because we have a menu for the week, doesn’t mean this is a restaurant! In upcoming posts, I will have examples of meals that I frequently make, for you to explore. Bottom line…preparing ahead is key.
- Make a Shopping List …. I make a shopping list and stick to that list. After I have done the first step, planning my menu, I go thru and list all the ingredients I need. To save money, I will look thru what I already have so I am not being wasteful. I am HUGE on clean eating (we will touch on that subject later) so I am sure to list the food items in groups so I don’t forget anything:
- Make a Shopping List part 2 …. Fruits and vegetables, proteins, breads and whole grains, frozen and refrigerated items. Making a list also makes it quicker for you to go thru the store without spending extra time aimlessly wandering the isles because you feel you forgot something.
