What’s Up With Water

What’s Up With Water Ya’ll?

Feel a little sluggish - fit life by cassieAsk yourself:

  • Do you feel sluggish throughout the day?
  • Is your skin dry and dull?

You may have a water deficit…not the drought we are experiencing here in Nor Cal, but rather the one going on inside that body of yours. Yep…a self -drought!   Sounds terrible, doesn’t it. There is good news…you need water, and there is PLENTY of it to drink (fortunately for us). According to the U.S. Geological Website our body is made up of over 60% water!

Do you realize that . . . .

Our body’s vital organs and systems such as our brain, heart, lungs, skin and digestive system need a lot of water to function properly?  Just like a car will overheat when it does not have fluid in its radiator it will overheat and not run properly. Among the things we need to survive…(or we think we need …like that chocolate fix) we really NEED water.

You almost NEVER see me without my water bottle. It goes with me EVERYWHERE…as it should. It is a part of my lifestyle and without it, I get cranky, and quite frankly I will forget to drink my water if it is not with me.

  • Rule of thumb is: when you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Dehydration can cause your body’s systems to shut down…and we don’t want that!

Water and the human body - fit life by cassie

So . . . How much water is enough? That is a good question, as my patients, friends and family often ask me. There is an 8×8 rule: one should drink eight 8oz glasses of water a day. That’s the minimum one should aim for. Having said that, your body loses water through breathing, sweating and urinating, and don’t forget your systems need a lot too, just to function. So, it is likely that you will need more that the RDA…just sayin. The amount can vary from person to person. Some people count the water content that is in food, like soups vegetables etc. Personally, I don’t…only because I don’t know how MUCH I am getting…unless I am drinking decaf tea or clear broth all day.

Water is AWESOME-Here is why:

  • Water Gives me energy by keeping me hydrated
  • It Helps my vision of clarity-I can think better! ( yay!)
  • I seem to have less headaches
  • The wrinkles that I have earned are a bit less noticeable
  • Water Flushes my body of all KINDS of nasty toxins
  • It will Improve my mood
  • It Aids in WEIGHT LOSS!
  • Water Keeps my body in check so everything works
  • It also Keeps my oral hygiene in check (so my dentist says)

I find that when I drink water throughout the day I get a better workout especially if my workout is in the afternoon. They say that having a few cups of water upon waking is good to get your digestive tract working…I do this before my coffee so I don’t forget.

Too Much of a Good Thing…

I always say…too much of a good thing is a BAD thing. Can you drink too much water? Absolutely…and it can wreak just as much havoc on your body as not drinking enough. This is uncommon usually, and can happen when one drinks far too much water in a short amount of time without the necessary electrolytes. This can throw your systems out of balance. This is common in athletes who’s need of fluids is far greater than that of the average joe.

Infused water with cucumber, lemon, lime, berry and mintIf you are starting out on your journey to better health and fitness, water is essential. It may be difficult at first, as anything is when you start out. Do not force yourself to drink all the required water at first. Baby steps. Start out with a refillable water bottle that you can MEASURE your consumption.

I like 32 oz bottles myself. They aren’t too big to carry with me, and that is about half of my consumption on most days. Start by giving yourself little “water goals”. For example: “I will drink 20 ozs. by noon” and “another 20 oz. by 4 pm”…etc.   That way you are more likely to get your water in throughout the day and not all at once.

Suggestion . . .
If you are like me, by the end of the day, I am done with the un-flavor of plain water. Opt for a few lemon or lime wedges, some Mio (or the like) of those sugar free water flavor additions. Cucumber, some berries and mint leaves work too! At dinner, I treat myself to a sodium free Sparkling water like Dasani…there are lots of flavors and brands…all sugar, sodium and calorie free! I love it and can add it to my water tally!

What’s up with water? A LOT! It is KING when it comes to our health, and is ESSENTIAL to our well- being. Think about it…what would we be without water? If you think that maybe you aren’t getting enough water, then grab that super cool water bottle at the local store, fill her up with that H20, and set your goals now! Keep it with you and in sight…your new best friend!

I challenge you! You can do it…you are WORTH it!! Happy drinking ya’ll!  Let me know how you are doing with your water ok?  I love to hear and read the comments of people making a change!  Drinking plenty of water is your #1 goal!
